AI Features Consistency Guidelines

Kontent.ai

Design system guidelines establishing baseline consistency across all AI features – ensuring users have a predictable and trustworthy experience with AI tools throughout the product.

🎯 Problem

Without consistent patterns, each new AI feature risks creating a fragmented experience where users must relearn interaction models, undermining trust and usability across the product.

Key Guidelines

Established six core guidelines for AI feature consistency.

  • Use Simple Status – Consistent communication of AI system status with spinner during interaction, alert type for errors, success type when finished
  • Use Consistent Actions – Standardized actions (Cancel, Try again, Change instruction during interaction; Dismiss, Try again, Change instruction for errors; Approve, Discard, Try again, Change instruction when finished)
  • Use Consistent Colors – Visual consistency with colorSuggestionBackgroundHighlighted and colorSuggestionBackgroundSelected tokens
  • Highlight AI-Generated Content – Enhance user recognition with designated AI color
  • Explicit Approval of AI-Generated Content – Require explicit user approval before AI content transitions to standard text
  • Allow Asynchronous Approval When Possible – Non-disruptive approval mechanism enabling continued work while AI processes

🌊 Impact

These guidelines informed the design of Ask AI dialog improvements, Author Assist (WYTIWYG) inline instructions, AI review feature, Translation with AI, AI Agent conversational interface, and all future AI features. Establishing these patterns early prevented inconsistency debt and created a cohesive AI experience across the product.
